Subprime sector looks to Washington

As the ominous drumbeat of bad news in the US subprime mortgage market continues, investors and politicians this week pinned hopes on government-sponsored mortgage groups Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to come to the market’s rescue.

Word that the US housing agencies had asked their regulator to raise caps currently in place on the size of their mortgage portfolios helped lift bond and equity markets on Monday as investors bet that the agencies could provide relief.
