Speculation confirmed as King's deputy steps down

The hurried announcement last night that Sir John Gieve, deputy governor of the Bank of England, would be standing down early next spring capped an evening of confusion, typical of recent sniping between the Bank and the Treasury.

Both claimed the issue was the other's responsibility. The news, which had been circulating as a rumour for two weeks, was initially reported by the BBC.
