More proportional system would discourage negative campaigning

Sir, Richard Brooks (Letters, April 20) is rightly concerned at the low level of trust in party politics (although distrust of politicians is not a new phenomenon). Measures such as postal voting on demand might improve turnouts, even if not dramatically, but they do nothing to tackle the "more fundamental problems" to which Mr Brooks refers.
