Sterling in about-turn against dollar

Sterling hit an eight-month high against the dollar on Tuesday before performing a dramatic about-turn after worse-than-expected data forced investors back into dollar and yen havens.

The pound reached as high as $1.6744 initially – a level not seen since October – after an increase in UK consumer confidence and a survey showing British house prices rose 0.9 per cent in June.
