Hu defends China’s role in global recovery

Hu Jintao, China’s president, on Friday mounted a vigorous defence of the country’s role in combating the global economic crisis, promising further increases in domestic consumption and a reduction in the economy’s reliance on exports.

In a major address to the 21-nation Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Singapore, Mr Hu said the world economic recovery was not yet firmly established and called for a determined push for global trade liberalisation to entrench new sources of growth.
