Confidence in US tech sector melts away

US stocks fell sharply this week as credit market losses at financial companies and fears of a decline in corporate spending on technology unsettled US equity markets.

Confidence in the tech sector’s ability to rise above mortgage-related problems evaporated amid worries about falling technology budgets at big banks. An index of large-cap technology stocks posted its worst weekly performance in more than five years.
