Spain on alert as blast kills two

There were fears of an escalation of violence in Spain by Eta, the Basque separatist group, on Thursday after a bomb placed under a car on the island of Mallorca killed two police officers, the second attack in as many days.

The blast in the heart of Spain’s tourist regions followed a bombing in the northern city of Burgos on Wednesday, which injured more than 60 people in and around a 14-storey barracks complex.
