Vivo, the Brazilian mobile phone operator, Friday bought two smaller operators, marking a further step in the consolidation of the country’s hotly contested telecommunications sector.
It also represents a victory in the struggle for domination of the industry between Telefónica of Spain – which shares control of Vivo with Portugal Telecom – and Telmex and América Móvil, both controlled by Carlos Slim, the Mexican billionaire entrepreneur.
