Inefficient market has no place for 'fair value'

Whisper it softly, but the emotive term "fair value" might be heading for the exit in company accounts, even if the broadly defined concept is still alive and kicking.

The International Accounting Standards Board discussed terminology at its meeting this month, following feedback on proposed standards dealing with the classification and measurement of financial instruments. "Exit", "exchange" or "current" value would all be relatively neutral substitutes.
