Turkey hits back at EU

Turkey struck back on Wednesday at European Union criticism of its sluggish progress towards accession, arguing the EU would be short-sighted to reject a country pivotal to its energy security and foreign policy ambitions.

The European Commission’s annual enlargement report made clear Turkey could no longer cite political distractions as a reason for delaying reforms, after the ruling party this summer escaped a constitutional court ban for “anti secular activities”.
