Riviera Maya: Building spree like Spain of 20 years ago

Just a few kilometres from Playa del Carmen, a bustling tourist resort on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, bulldozers are moving thousands of tons of earth from a swathe of virgin forest.

As they scour deeper into the soil, turquoise-tinted pools of fresh water rise to the surface, creating small lakes that will soon become lethal traps in a 27-hole golf course built with US retirees in mind.
