Sharon faces early poll calls

Ariel Sharon, Israeli prime minister, last night faced calls for early elections after rebels in his own Likud party forced him into an embarrassing parliamentary climbdown over the appointment of new ministers to his coalition government.

Mr Sharon was forced to withdraw two of three nominees after the Knesset voted 60-54 against accepting the inclusion of all three in the coalition cabinet.
