London’s police force was plunged deeper into turmoil on Friday night after the inquest jury examining the shooting of an innocent Brazilian man mistaken for a suicide bomber determined that a catalogue of police failings contributed to his death.
The open verdict returned by the jury was the most damning available to it after the coroner had earlier ruled out a finding that Jean Charles de Menezes was unlawfully killed by police in July 2005 – two weeks after a series of deadly suicide bomb attacks ripped through the capital.
