ECB chief warns Sarkozy on rates

Jean-Claude Trichet, European Central Bank president, clashed publicly with Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday, warning the French president that he was violating European Union treaties by attempting to influence monetary policy and that his actions could backfire.

In a rare angry outburst, Mr Trichet insisted: “Everyone knows that we are fiercely independent.”
