Global markets stage cautious recovery

Global stock markets staged a cautious recovery on Wednesday as Wall Street rallied a day after its worst slide since 2001 and other markets partially recovered from heavy early losses.

Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, helped to calm nerves, saying there did not seem to have been a single trigger for Tuesday’s sharp falls and “no material change” in the outlook for the US economy had resulted.
