Ukraine accepts long wait to join EU

The victors in Ukraine's re-run election accept that the country's Orange Revolution will not lead to early European Union membership, according to the chief foreign policy adviser to Viktor Yushchenko, the president-elect.

But they see membership as a realistic long-term goal to be achieved after working initially under the EU's "Neighbourhood Programme".
