Big loss of support for civil liberties

The nation's traditionally strong commitment to civil liberties is on the wane, according to the annual British Social Attitudes Survey.

Majorities of 70-80 per cent see compulsory identity cards, longer police detention of terror suspects without charge and the phone tapping and tagging of terrorist suspects as a price worth paying for security.
