Jobless total set to soar to 1.8m

Unemployment is likely to have risen above 1.8m, the highest level since 1998, a year after Labour came to power, official statistics are expected to report on Wednesday.

The rising tide of joblessness, as the effects of the credit crisis spread to other sectors, will increase the pressure on the government as it considers a mixture of tax cuts and increased public spending in an effort to shore up the flagging economy.
