The number of people applying to be undergraduates at Cambridge University has topped 15,000 for the first time in its 800-year history, suggesting efforts to get students from all social classes to apply are bearing fruit.

Although it was unclear as yet what proportion of the rise came from state schools the increase should relieve some of the pressure on Cambridge to make the university more socially inclusive.
