A champion for the persecuted

The work of Human Rights Watch can be unrelentingly dark. But occasionally there are what Kenneth Roth, its executive director, calls “champagne moments”.

One came in 2006 when Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, was arrested and sent to stand trial in The Hague for orchestrating a campaign of terror in Sierra Leone.
