When WPP joined the exodus of British companies moving their tax base to Ireland last week, the announcement by the world’s second largest advertising group was muffled by the chaos of the financial crisis.

But it was a highly significant departure that underlines a sea-change in how big British businesses view themselves. As companies become more international, they feel less bound by national loyalties.
