Smurfit Kappa to pay down debt

Smurfit Kappa has launched a €500m (£448m) bond issue in a bid to strengthen further its finances amid poor but stabilising trading conditions in the European paper packaging industry.

Gary McGann, chief executive, said the bond issue would be used to pay down senior debt held with banks and to push out the maturity profile of borrowing facilities covering Smurfit’s net debt, which stands at slightly more than €3bn.
