Jobs growth calms US recession fears

The US economy created more jobs last month than even the most optimistic Wall Street economists were forecasting, making the Federal Reserve less likely to cut interest rates again this year.

Employers added 166,000 staff to payrolls, almost double the number expected, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.7 per cent, according to official figures released on Friday.
