Circuit City, the US electronics retailer, opened a store on New York's Fifth Avenue last year sited right next door to a Best Buy outlet that opened a year before.

But Circuit City's efforts to persuade customers that it can hold its own against its larger and more successful rival are looking increasingly strained.
