European Union negotiations with Russia on a long-term partnership agreement, postponed following the war in Georgia in August but due to restart soon, will be long and difficult, diplomats said yesterday.

Vladimir Chizhov, Russia's ambassador to the EU and its chief negotiator in the talks, said: "You can imagine that we're in for a really strenuous and time-consuming exercise."
