Far too much land protected, planning study says

Housing and commercial projects are being held back by the fact that far too much land is “protected” from development, according to a big report on planning laws to be published by Gordon Brown on Tuesday.

The report, by Kate Barker, a member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, will say Britain has twice as much “protected” land as other industrial countries – in spite of having one of the highest densities of population.
