Obama notches up record donations

Barack Obama's campaign raised an unprecedented $150m in September, further expanding the spending gap with John McCain, the self-styled underdog in the race for the White House.

The announcement of the record fundraising came as Colin Powell, a Republican elder statesman and former Bush administration secretary of state, yesterday said he would vote for Mr Obama on November 4.
