Constitutional amendments that would ease the ban on wearing the Muslim headscarf at Turkish universities went before parliament on Tuesday ahead of what is expected to be a noisy debate on one of the government’s key policy aims.
The ruling Justice and Development party (AKP), which has roots in political Islam, agreed the wording of the amendments late on Monday with the conservative MHP opposition party. The debate is expected to take several days and the two parties combined have enough MPs in the 550-seat chamber to approve constitutional changes.
