When A-level results are published on Thursday, the figures will confirm that the exam has become as hard to fail as it once was to pass. The pass rate is expected to rise for the 23rd year in succession, to almost 97 per cent, against 68 per cent in 1982.

For the most part, the soaring pass rate does not reflect brighter pupils or better teaching. Genuine improvements do not occur this consistently or this rapidly.
