Total stock value hits record level

An Englishman is right to regard his home as his castle, as official figures published on Monday showed the real value of the nation’s housing stock rose to a record last year.

The total value of homes owned by UK households in 2006 was £3,696bn, a rise of 10.8 per cent on the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Houses account for 60 per cent of the nation’s wealth.
