Sir, Larry Siedentop (July 2) makes an extremely valid point, but does not draw the right political conclusions. Yes, the weakening of democratic cultures in the European Union is an unintended consequence of the method of European integration pursued over half a century. European citizens are sensitive to this fact. What the negative referendums show us is not that they are against Europe, but rather that they want a different Europe. This new Europe must fulfil the promise of liberal democracy.
