Al-Qaeda resurgence threatens Yemen

A few years ago a Yemeni programme to deradicalise jihadis and reinsert them into society was held up as an example of a creative fight against terrorism.

Judge Hamoud al-Hitar, the chief of the programme known as the Dialogue Committee, was gaining celebrity status, courted by European governments eager to learn how to turn extremists away from violence.
