The only drugs that claim to improve memory for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease should no longer be available on the National Health Service, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence is about to recommend.

New evidence suggests that the drugs are less effective than the manufacturers claim and are not sufficiently cost-effective to justify them being paid for by the NHS, according to an initial new appraisal of the drugs on which a final decision will be taken in July.
