An early exit poll last night gave Albania's governing Democratic party a four-point lead over the opposition Socialists in the general election.

Such a final result would fail to deliver an overall majority to the right-of- centre Democrats, so the smaller Socialist Movement for Integration, trailing well behind, could play a pivotal role in forming a government.
