Shareholders and employees of Volkswagen have been told that the German government aims to maintain its special treatment of the continent’s largest car maker – despite European pressure to change the relationship.
As expected, Berlin changed a controversial law on Wednesday that had protected the company against hostile takeovers. But it pledged to retain other parts of the law that enshrine the influence of trade unions and the government of Lower Saxony – VW’s home region – over the business.
