California: Golden state sticks to its green guns

When it comes to legislation to protect the environment and fight global warming, few US states can rival California.

The most populous US state has almost 37m inhabitants and has used its economic clout to take a leading role in tacking climate change. When the US refused to sign up to the Kyoto protocol, California set its own vehicle emissions standards and sued the Bush administration for the right to implement them.
