Retail gloom pulls London back below key level

Babcock International surged in London yesterday before the mid cap engineering group confirmed the rumours that it was in takeover talks.

The shares climbed 4.3 per cent to 270p, its highest level in more than 10-years, as traders gossiped that BAE Systems was considering a bid for the group’s Engineering and Naval Services division.
