The European Commission on Wednesday handed out a €183m ($258.2m) fine to four companies that fixed the price of bitumen in Spain over a 12-year period.

BP, the UK energy group, escaped a €66.4m penalty after blowing the whistle on the cartel in 2002. Europe’s antitrust regulator fined Repsol and Cepsa of Spain €80.5m and €83.9m respectively. It hit smaller operators Nynas of Sweden and Galp of Portugal for €10.6m and €8.7m.
