US closer to deal on Africa aid, says Brown

The UK and the US are edging closer to a deal on debt relief for Africa ahead of the G8 summit, Gordon Brown said yesterday, but the US is yet to be persuaded to pledge more money.

The chancellor restated the UK's demands on debt relief and aid ahead of next week's Group of Seven finance ministers meeting in London. "This is not the time for timidity nor a time to fear reaching too high," Mr Brown said.
