Ministers told to shun pay rise

Ministers have been ordered to refuse any pay rise in the coming year as Gordon Brown seeks to set an example of austerity at the highest levels of government.

They will forgo a 1.5 per cent rise – as will several high-profile Conservatives – in a move intended to demonstrate solidarity with the economic difficulties faced by many voters.
