Pfizer administers R&D injection

Pfizer made a fresh bid on Thursday to become a leading force in scientific discovery, naming a new chief scientist and launching an independent biotechnology research arm in California.

The world’s largest drugmaker promoted one of its own scientists, Martin Mackay, to be chief of Pfizer research and development, replacing John LaMattina. It also hired Briggs Morrison from US rival Merck to run Pfizer’s clinical development.
