Timeline: Radovan Karadzic

1945 Radovan Karadzic is born into poverty in Savnik, Montenegro (then part of Yugoslavia), the son of a Serb nationalist fighter.

1960 He moves to Sarajevo, marries, studies medicine and becomes a psychiatrist. He begins writing poetry and meets Dobrica Cosic, a Serb nationalist writer, who encourages Mr Karadzic to enter politics.
