Merkel's party in danger of Hesse defeat

Days away from a regional election long billed as an easy win, the party of Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, is facing a contest that could see it suffer its first big electoral setback in six years.

The Christian Democratic Union has suffered a marked drop in support in the western state of Hesse in recent days, opinion polls show. The state is one of two holding elections this weekend.
