Q: What is Xinjiang?

A: Xinjiang is a region in north-western China bordering Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Silk Road, the ancient trading route between China and Europe before the rise of sea trade, ran through this region. Xinjiang is also home to the bulk of China’s natural resources, including large reserves of oil and gas.
