Surprise inflation boost for sterling

Sterling resumed its uptrend on Tuesday as a surprise jump in inflation led the market to once again price in the likelihood of one further UK rate rise.

Rising transport, food and furniture prices pushed consumer inflation to 1.9 per cent in the year to March, the highest rate since May 1998 and comfortably ahead of the forecast 1.7 per cent.
