Retailers hurt by prospect of leftover Christmas stock

Marks and Spencer was among the biggest fallers as the FTSE 100 closed lower for the first time this week.

Shares in the retailer fell 5 per cent to 231¼p as investors took fright at news that M&S is to abandon one-day 20 per cent-off sales in favour of large discounts (20-30 per cent) across a number of products.
