Another big job in the telecoms industry was not in Ben Verwaayen’s plans after stepping down last June as chief executive of BT, the UK’s leading fixed-line phone company.

But he says he was urged to become chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent by some of its customers, as well as former colleagues at BT.
