Charles Kennedy has set out to give the Liberal Democrats more firepower by promoting the brightest talents and some new faces in his frontbench team.

Mr Kennedy brought in rising stars, many still in their thirties, to replace those perceived as the weaker spokesmen and trimmed his “shadow cabinet” from 25 to 21.
