Brown presses ahead on treaty process

Gordon Brown, Britain’s prime minister, has ordered the completion of the UK’s ratification of the Lisbon treaty on Wednesday, in spite of the Irish No vote and demands from the opposition Conservatives that the process be halted.

Mr Brown promised Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, on Wednesday that he would honour his promise to push through the treaty, which should complete its final parliamentary stages on the eve of next week’s EU summit in Brussels.
