Food: Leftovers offer hope to hungry

Those filling their supermarket trolleys for the weekly shop or buying their groceries online are unlikely to ponder how much of their purchases may end up thrown away.

In the US, it could be up to 40 per cent, or 1,400 kilocalories a day for each American, according to research just published by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, in Bethseda, Maryland.
